How to Apply for Georgian Citizenship by Naturalization
Georgian citizenship by naturalization has four main pathways, each with its own residency and eligibility requirements. All of them end with the same requirement: passing a knowledge exam on the Georgian language, Georgian history, and basic principles of law before your application can be submitted. This page summarizes the pathways and where the exam fits in; see the complete exam guide for exam details.
The four naturalization pathways
- Standard
- 10 consecutive years of lawful residence in Georgia, plus an economic connection - employment, property ownership, or business activity in Georgia
- Simplified (marriage-based)
- 5 consecutive years of lawful residence for applicants married to a Georgian citizen
- Exception
- Granted by the President outside the standard residency requirements, for example for ancestral ties, significant investment, or exceptional merit in sports, science, or the arts
- Restoration
- For people who previously held and lost Georgian citizenship
Continuous residence generally means no more than around 90 days outside Georgia per year, with exceptions for education or medical treatment.
The knowledge exam requirement
Most pathways require passing the Georgian language, history, and law knowledge exam before you can submit your citizenship application - see the complete exam guide for the format, fees, and how to prepare, or try real sample questions. Some applicants are exempt, including minors, people with certain documented disabilities, and - depending on the pathway - some restoration and social-support cases. The restoration pathway may only require the language portion rather than all three subjects.
Applying
Applications are processed by Georgia's Public Service Development Agency (PSDA). Processing time varies by procedure and whether an expedited fee is paid; budget for a process that can take anywhere from a few weeks to several months, plus the 2-5 months most applicants spend preparing for and passing the knowledge exam beforehand.
